Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Traditional music is an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, serving as a medium for storytelling, social commentary, and the preservation of cultural values. Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, has increasingly incorporated traditional music into its productions, using it as both a narrative tool and a means of cultural promotion. In Azare Local Government Area, Bauchi State, where traditional music is a significant aspect of cultural identity, Kannywood films act as a bridge between the past and present, preserving traditional tunes while introducing them to younger generations (Abubakar & Ali, 2023). Studies indicate that incorporating traditional music in films enhances cultural pride and fosters a sense of belonging among audiences (Yusuf & Mohammed, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of traditional music in Hausa culture, modernization and the globalized entertainment industry have contributed to its decline. Many young people in Azare are increasingly disconnected from their cultural roots, favoring contemporary music over traditional sounds. While Kannywood films have the potential to reverse this trend by revitalizing interest in traditional music, there is limited research on their role in promoting cultural preservation and appreciation in the region (Garba, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine how Kannywood films portray traditional music in their narratives.
  2. To evaluate the impact of Kannywood films on the appreciation of traditional music in Azare.
  3. To identify challenges in using films as a tool for promoting traditional music.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do Kannywood films incorporate traditional music in their narratives?
  2. What is the impact of these films on the local audience’s appreciation of traditional music?
  3. What are the challenges in promoting traditional music through Kannywood films?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Kannywood films positively influence the appreciation of traditional music in Azare.
  2. The portrayal of traditional music in films fosters cultural preservation.
  3. Limited access to Kannywood films constrains their impact on promoting traditional music.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into how Kannywood films serve as a platform for cultural preservation, particularly in promoting traditional music. It will benefit cultural advocates, filmmakers, and policymakers in leveraging media to sustain cultural heritage in Bauchi State and beyond.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on the role of Kannywood films in promoting traditional music in Azare Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Kannywood Films: Films produced in the Hausa-language film industry in Northern Nigeria.
  • Traditional Music: Indigenous music styles that reflect the cultural heritage of a community.
  • Azare: A local government area in Bauchi State, Nigeria.
